Family-based immigration enables a foreign national to become a lawful permanent resident based on the fact that s/he has a relative who is a citizen of the United States or a Lawful Permanent Resident.
Lawful Permanent Residency (LPR), also known as “green card,” grants a foreign national the privilege of permanently living and working in the United States. U.S. immigration and nationality law provides for a number of ways to become a lawful permanent resident. Immigration through a family member is one them.
If you want to become a lawful permanent resident on the basis of your relationship to a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States, you must go through a multi-step process:
Click here for application procedures for becoming a lawful permanent resident while in the United States. If you are outside the United States when an immigrant visa number becomes available for you, you must then go to the U.S. Consulate office servicing the area in which you reside to complete your processing. This is the other way in which you can apply to secure an immigrant visa number.
Note: Information concerning the new K (advance admission for the spouse and children of a U.S. citizen) and new V (advance admission for the spouse and the minor children of a lawful permanent resident) non-immigrant categories is available but not yet incorporated here. Updates on the Legal Immigration Family Equity (LIFE) Act are available at the USCIS Web site.
